Host club youngster Brendan Scott and Murrayfield rising star Gillian Simpson took the honours in the East Regional Final of the Dunfermline Building Society Junior Masters at Dunfermline GC yesterday.

In the boys section, it was a Dunfermline one-two, with Scott - playing off 22 - coming out on top with 41 points, pipping young club mate Brendan Spriddle by a point. A fine day for Fife was completed with Lochgelly’s Sean Murphy clinching third spot with an equally impressive 40 points.

Gillian Simpson, a 6-handicapper, fired a superb scratch score of 72 which included birdies at the 1st, 4th and 18th holes to record a total of 42 points which would not be beaten. Elie and Earlsferry Thistle ace Linsey Stevenson took the silver medal with 40 points, whilst another Fifer, Gemma Brown from Thornton clinched third spot with 35 points in a highly competitive girls section with a 20-strong field.

The top nine girls qualify for the Gleneagles final, with all those on 31 points or better making the cut. Another Elie youngster Kirsty Simpson came fourth, with Deeside’s Megan Clyne taking fifth place.

The boys section cut off mark was 35 points and it was Monifieth’s Ben Grant who took the tenth and final qualifying spot courtesy of a countback, edging out William Fergusson (Murrayfield) and Gavin Reid (Lothianburn). Fourth place went to Royal Burgess ace Oliver Cutting, with Murrayfield’s Jamie Johnstone in fifth, both on the 39 point mark, to secure their names in the Gleneagles Final in October.

Presenting the prizes, Dunfermline Building Society’s PR & Media Manager, Helen Robertson said:

“We’ve seen a great day’s golf here today at Dunfermline and the players can all be proud of their performances. We are delighted to sponsor this event and support grass roots golf in Scotland.

“Its encouraging to see so many girls playing golf now and part of our sponsorship is to help drive this forward. We wish all finalists the best of luck at Gleneagles and hope to see those who just missed out taking part in 2008.”
