Melissa Reid leads England amateurs in Women’s British Open

International Melissa Reid (pictured below) led the England amateur charge in the first round of the Women’s British Open with a level par 73 on the Old Course at St Andrews.
English champion Naomi Edwards (Ganton) is one shot back on 74 while her club colleague Rachel Bell and Kerry Smith (Waterlooville) both scored 77.
Melissa, who plays at Chevin in Derbyshire, had two birdies and two pars in her round – but was disappointed with her score. “To be honest it should have been much better. I had no putts drop at all. On each of the first three holes I hit it to within 8ft and missed all of them.”
But she went on: “I hit the ball pretty solid and if I hole a few putts tomorrow I should be OK. I’m really looking forward to it.”
Melissa has a great record north of the border, having already won the Scottish strokeplay championship and the St Rule Trophy this season.
She’s loving the British Open experience. “It’s really weird, being around all these players like Lorena Ochoa – but it’s awesome, just fantastic,” said Melissa, who had a practice round with Annika Sorenstam. “It was really good to play with her and see what she does.”
