Scotland’s U16’s beat the North of England 8 – 7 last night in an impressive fight back after finding themselves 3-2 down in the morning foursomes at Northumberland Golf Club

In the annual clash, the young Scots were trailing 7 – 3 in the afternoon singles clashes, with five matches still out on the course before defiant wins from Colin Baird, Tom Blennerhasset and William Russell helped to remedy the situation. Chris Robb and Daniel Young were left to battle to battle it out on the moorland course in the final critical matches of the day.

Chris Robb was all square playing the 17th with Jamie McDonald, but the Inchmarlo player’s 2nd shot to 8foot of the pin which he holed for a birdie helped him to claim the upperhand. Robb capitalised on his shot making with a great approach to the 18th to 10 foot followed by two putts to secure victory by 1 hole.

Daniel Young was the last man out on the course and was 2 down at the 10th in his must win singles campaign. A momentous rally from the young Scot saw him win five of the next seven holes including a gutsy 30foot putt at the 17th to win his game 2 & 1 to take the trophy for Scotland, who are now in touch of the North of England’s winning record in the annual bout, 5 ½ - 4 ½ in the event’s 10 year history.

SGU National Junior Coach, Spencer Henderson said after the match, “I am very happy with the way the players responded to the pressure of losing the morning foursomes. To fight back in the singles matches showed a real test of character and determination, despite the North of England providing strong opposition.

“The players will need to take confidence from this win when they face England later this coming weekend in the hope of retaining the title they took last year for the first time in nine attempts.”
