Northern Light Lewis Reid and Fife girl Camilla Tait were crowned the 2007 Dunfermline Building Society Junior Masters at the Queens Course, Gleneagles.
In glorious sunshine on the famous Perthshire course, Reid and Tait - both 16 years old - fought off competition from a field of 49 boys and 29 girls, who had qualified for a place in the final following five regional qualifiers and a starting field of 400 young competitors.
Three-handicapper Lewis, a member of Fortrose & Rosemarkie, was in the second last group to finish, and amassed 40 Stableford points – halves of 21 and 19pt – with a gross round of 67, one under the boys’ par and CSS for the day.
His gross birdies at the fourth, seventh and 15th in halves of 34 and 33 made his accomplished round even more impressive given that he had never played the prestigious course before, coupled with a long drive from Fortrose for his 7.00am tee time.
Commenting on his victory, North District boys team player Lewis said, “I drove well and I putted well,” which saw him claim the spoils ahead of Jamie Lees from Kintore, who was runner up with 39 points off a handicap of nine.
At just 14 years old, Jamie scored 18 points on the outward half and 21 points after the turn. Jamie said after his round, “My short game was quite good. I pitched and putted to save par a lot of times.”
Camilla Tait’s points total of 41 was matched by Fiona Milne (Glen) from North Berwick – who won the tournament two years ago. However, Camilla, who plays off 10, was awarded the girls trophy based on a better inward points score of 23 ahead of Milne’s 19 points.
Tait, from St Regulus Ladies’ said after completing her winning round, “I holed some good putts – a 15-footer for a gross birdie at the first and from 10ft for a gross birdie 3 at the 11th but the best of the day for me came at the 15th.
“I drove the green at the 220yd hole and holed the putt from 15ft for a gross eagle 2 and I had a stroke at that hole so that gave me 5pt for a net albatross 2.”
Runner up Milne, playing in her third Junior Masters Grand Final and girls champion of the Glen Club for two years running said, “I drove well and hit my approach shots well – and I enjoyed myself.”
Fellow Glen clubmate Keren Ward took third place in the girls competition and Jamie Black from West Lothian finished third in the boys tournament.
