Bernard Gallacher’s Tartan Tour professionals shared the morning foursomes 3-3 with the SGU amateurs as the Bunkered Matchplay Challenge got underway at the Carrick at Cameron House on the banks of Loch Lomond.
Colin Gillies, the two-times Scottish PGA champion, and his partner, Craig Lee, struck the first blow for the pros when they swept to a commanding 6&5 win over Colville Park teenager Ross Kellett and Scotland cap Gavin Dear.
Chris Kelly (pictured above) and Chris Doak were edged out by one hole against former British Amateur champion and Scott Borrowman but Stephen Gray and Sam Cairns kept the SGPA side’s noses in front with a 3&2 triumph over Glenn Campbell and Scottish strokeplay champion Kevin McAlpine.
David Orr and order of merit runner-up Paul McKechnie held on for a one hole win over SGU No.1 Callum Macaulay and Paul O’Hara on the final green but reigning Scottish PGA champion Mark Loftus and Robert Arnott went down 2&1 to Wallace Booth and Scott Mann.
Amateur aces Mark Hillson and Scott Henry made sure the match would be evenly poised heading into the afternoon fourballs when they beat Northern Open winner Murray Urquhart and Tartan Tour No.1 Greig Hutcheon 3&2.
