Phil Mickelson confined to bed and may miss scheduled 2008 debut at PGA Tour Buick Invitational

World Number 2 Phil Mickelson’s scheduled debut on the 2008 PGA Tour at this week’s Buick Invitational was in doubt today (Monday) when was confined to bed with a respiratory problem.

Mickelson, a three-times winner at Torrey Pines Golf Club, has been struggling with shortness of breath and fatigue since October. A three-times major champion, Mickelson won the Buick Invitational in 1993, 2000 and 2001.

He has been advised to rest for the next two days, and has not played tournament golf since winning the HSBC Champions in a three-way playoff two months ago.

The American had been hoping to make his 2008 Tour debut this week before playing in the next four events on the West Coast swing.

The tournament starts on Thursday when world number one Tiger Woods will be bidding to clinch the title for a fourth year in a row.
