Hertfordshire’s Lucy Williams, from the English Women’s Golf Association Performance Squad, is among a record number of golfing students to receive R&A bursaries.
A total of 91 students will receive the awards, which range from £500 to £3000 and are intended to help golfers to combine their studies with competitive play.
Lucy Williams, who plays at Mid-Herts, is a student at Birmingham University. Among the other English golfers to receive bursaries are Jo Hodge, a former England girl international from Knowle, who is now studying at Buckinghamshire Chilterns on the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme.
Other bursars include: Holly Calvert (Silloth) who studies at Stirling University; Lucinda Davies (Peterborough Milton) from Birmingham University; Stephanie Farrar (Sandiway) a student at Stirling; Nikki Hunter (Gosforth) and Ami Storey (Ponteland) who both study at Northumbria University.
The R&A’s total annual spend on university golf is over £320,000 and includes grants to support golf programmes at 12 universities in Great Britain and Ireland.
The R&A bursars’ tournament in April will be played over The Old and Eden Courses at St Andrews. The winner of the women’s event will be offered a place in the field at one of this season LET tournaments.
Lucy Williams led the women at the British Universities Sports Association (BUSA) northern regional strokeplay qualifying event at Wallasey. She finished ahead of Ami Storey, Lucinda Davies and Nikki Hunter.
