Spanish Mens Amateur Golf Championship victory promotes Daniel Willett to R&A World Ranked No 1

Posted by admin under Golf Stat Attack, Latest Golf News, Mens Amateur Golf, R&A Mens World Amateur Rankings

Daniel Willett of England has moved into the top spot in The R&A World Amateur Golf Ranking with victory in the Spanish Amateur, ending US Walker Cup player Rickie Fowler’s 24-week run as the world No 1.

Daniel Willett (England) ended the 24-week run of Rickie Fowler as world No 1

Willett, who spent 18 weeks as WAGR No 2, beat Spain’s Jordi Garcia Pinto by 5 and 3 in the 36-hole final of the Spanish Amateur at Pals. The 20-year-old from Rotherham had 10 birdies in the 33 holes of the final and was seven under par when the match ended.

He won the South of England and English Amateur titles in successive weeks last summer before making his Walker Cup debut, where he held world No 1 Colt Knost to a halved match in the final singles, and then cut short his scholarship in Alabama and returned home to play full-time amateur golf.

In two further changes in the top 10, Kevin Chappell of the USA moved up five places to No 6, and Esteban Martinez of Argentina climbed 12 places to No 10.
