England’s women make fine start in Ashes match

Posted by admin under Ladies Amateur Golf, Latest Golf News

England’s women got off to a fine start on the first day of The Ashes match against the Australians at Moonah Links in Victoria.

Internationals Liz Bennett (Brokenhurst Manor), Naomi Edwards (Ganton), Florentyna Parker (Royal Birkdale) and Kerry Smith (Waterlooville) were unbeaten in the singles. Naomi Edwards and Rachel Jennings (Izaak Walton) added another half-point to the tally in the foursomes.   But despite their efforts the Australians hold a two-point lead at the halfway stage of the two-day mixed match. They are 8½-6½ ahead with ten singles matches to come. After the match the players – all members of the English Women’s Golf Association Performance Squad – will move to

Adelaide to play the Australian women’s strokeplay and matchplay championships. The trip will give them experience of courses which will be used for the Espirito Santo Trophy at the World Amateur Team Championships in

Adelaide in October. They are accompanied by captain Julie Otto and coach Steve Robinson. The mixed

England team is completed by six members of the English Golf Union’s Elite Squad.
