England’s women shine – but Australia win the Ashes

England’s women shone again on the second day of The Ashes match at Moonah Links in Victoria – but they couldn’t prevent an Australian victory. The Australians scored a one-point win in the two-day, mixed contest and claimed their second Ashes victory.
After the first day’s play England trailed by two points, but the internationals from the English Women’s Golf Association’s Performance Squad quickly put the team ahead as they led the order in the final day’s singles.
Florentyna Parker (Royal Birkdale), Kerry Smith (Waterlooville) and Rachel Jennings (Izaak Walton) all scored convincing wins and Liz Bennett (Brokenhurst Manor) was only denied her full point on the last when her opponent birdied the hole.

The England team now look forward to next week’s Australian Amateur Championships with the next Ashes match scheduled for Royal Birkdale in 2009.
