It was a tale of two halves as the semi finals concluded on the penultimate day of the Scottish Boys Championship, at Southerness yesterday.

Kirkhills Paul Shields romped to a place in the final, after securing an early lead – a feature of his recent bouts in the Boys Champs on the way to his semi final - which North Berwick’s Oliver Huish was unable to counter. The West of Scotland Institute of Sport supported golfer was 4up by the turn and never relinquished his lead, extending his winning margin to a 5 hole lead by the 10th hole. Missing a 4 foot putt at the 13th for the game, the national cap finally closed down the match at the 14th, hitting a good 5 iron shot followed by two putts for a place in the final.A delighted Shields commented, “It has not sunk in yet that I have made it to the final, it’s not quite real yet. I have come to Southerness quite a lot over the winter and just before the first Junior Tour at Kingsbarns in preparation for this tournament, so it has paid off.”

Oliver Huish concluded after his 5&4 defeat, “It was good to get as far as I did in this tournament. When you get to the last 16 and then the last 8, every match is tough and it’s a real struggle out there. I just didn’t get up there in my match with Paul today, once you are 2 down it is difficult, but anything more than that and it is just too difficult to claw it back.

Playing seven rounds in his last attempt at the Scottish Boys title, Huish added, “I am absolutely shattered – it has been a lot of golf this week and I could have gone out three rounds ago, as they were close matches. I will now set my sights on the Scottish Boys Stroke Play Championship later this summer, and maybe play in my Club Championship qualifier tomorrow.”

In a stark contrast with the first match of the afternoon, national caps Michael Stewart and David Law battled it out to the last hole before Stewart finally forced his way through to take the last remaining place in the final.

Stewart, the pre-tournament favourite and winner of the first Junior Tour event at Kingsbarns a few weeks ago, found himself in unfamiliar territory at 1 down after Law birdied the par 4 1st – only the second time he had been the underdog since his third round match. His title campaign looked to be further disrupted when the wheel came off his power trolley at the 2nd hole - and he was forced to carry his full size tournament bag for a hole and a half, before a replacement trolley was provided. Stewart rallied at the 4th winning the hole with a par to take the duel all square, and the players remained evenly matched until the turn when Stewart won the 9thwith a par. Securing a two hole cushion at the tenth, Law prevented Stewart from extending his lead, fighting back with a birdie at the 14th and taking his Quadrangular team mate to the last holes, which Stewart had not frequented before his seventh round tussle.

The Troon ace, runner up at the Boys Stroke Play last year and the lowest handicapper in the field, finding himself 1up with two holes to play, parred the 17th and eagled the last after holing a 35 footer to win the match by two holes.

The number one seed said after his bout, “We both played really well today, Dave will be disappointed with his number of three putts – but that was the only thing that really separated us today.”

Commenting on the final tomorrow with his friend and no. 3 seed Paul Shields, he added, “It’s always hard playing against friends and this will be the first time we will meet as opponents so it will be another close match. But today I played my best games, so I am glad I have two solid performances under my belt before the final tomorrow.”

The 36 hole final will get underway at 8.30am this morning.
