Tania Elosegui leads after round 1 of Catalonia Ladies 2008 at Emporda Golf Club

Spaniard Tania Elosegui took a one stroke lead after the first round of the Catalonia Ladies 2008 at Emporda Golf Club near Girona.

Playing in a Pro Am format, the 26-year-old third year Tour player from San Sebastien carded an individual score of four-under-par 67.

She combined seven birdies with three bogeys over the links style course, which is located almost two hours’ drive from Barcelona, going out in three-under-par 32 and coming back in one-under-par 35.

Sweden’s Lotta Wahlin fired a three-under 68 to take second position, with Spain’s Beatriz Recari and Australia’s Joanne Mills on one-under-par in third.

Despite coming from Spain, Elosegui had never played the golf course before. She said: “I like the golf course very much but I think it’s a bit tricky. I think it would help if you could get to know it first.”

Elosegui represented Spain with Paula Marti at last week’s VCI European Ladies Golf Cup, also in Spain, where the pair finished in seventh position.

She said: “I feel very comfortable with my game at the moment. I changed my grip after last week and I guess it’s working well!

“I felt very relaxed this morning and when I sunk my birdie putt from seven metres on the first hole I think that helped!”

Elosegui bettered her career low round on the LET by a stroke, although the Emporda course is playing as a par 71. The second and final round will feature professional golfers only, with the first tee time at 9.00am Spanish time and the last tee time at 10.21am.

The Catalonia Ladies 2008 is a two day event featuring a €60,000 prize fund, with €9,480 for the winner.

The tournament leads up to the Open de Espana Femenino at Panoramica Golf and Country Club, San Jordi, Castellon from 17-20 April, which will be the first full field event on the 2008 Ladies European Tour schedule.
