Eight members of the England team that defeated France in last weekend’s international at Frilford Heath will be in action in the Brabazon Trophy starting at Trevose Golf Club in Cornwall tomorrow.

Willett would have started among the favourites but with the cream of the amateur game parading their skills over the North Cornish links another proven winner is assured. However, the rest of the England team, including Dale Whitnell, current leader of the EGU’s Order of Merit, will be on parade.
Matt Haines from Kent, winner of the Lytham Trophy, could add his name to the Championship’s Roll on Honour, as could Chris Wood from Bristol, another England cap and a member of the winning Bonallack Trophy team in Spain.
The foreign entry is again strong with players from 20 nations in the field including three from Australia, Scott Arnold, Rohan Blizard and Tim Stewart, runner-up in last year’s Amateur Championship, while the French include Benjamin Hebert, the current European Amateur champion.
Another England man entered is Gary Wolstenholme, the country’s most-capped player, who will be attempting to land one trophy that is, so far, missing from his vast portfolio of major victories.
After two busy qualifying days, a total of 166 players will tee-off tomorrow. The qualifying score on Wednesday was 72 with boy cap Eddie Pepperell leading the way with 66, one ahead of England international Ed Richardson
Sean Elliott headed today’s bidders with a nine-birdie 64, a course record, with those on 73 or better qualifying.
