Spaniard Azahara Munoz from Arizons State University (pictured below) rolled in a 25-foot birdie putt on the first hole of sudden death Friday to win the NCAA women’s golf individual championship just ahead of UCLA’s Tiffany Joh.

Not only is Munoz the top female golfer in the NCAA, but she is also the top student in NCAA women’s golf. In addition to winning the NCAA Individual Championship, Munoz was also the recipient of this year’s Edith Cummings Munson Award. The award goes to the student-athlete who is both a NGCA All-American Scholar and a NGCA All-American. If more than one student-athlete qualifies, the student-athlete with the highest GPA receives the award. A donation of $5,000 is given from the Curtis & Edith Cummings Munson Foundation to the general scholarship fund of the recipient’s institution. Munoz, who carries over a 3.9 in psychology, is the first Sun Devil to win the award as well as the first NCAA Individual Champion to earn both titles.
In the team competition, Southern California removed most of the drama on the back nine of the University of New Mexico Championship Course, pulling away from the Bruins to win by six strokes.
The Trojans, who won their second team championship, finished with a 16-over 1,168.
Munoz and Joh, who were playing in the same threesome, were within one stroke of each other all afternoon and finished the day as the only golfers under par with 1-under 287s.
