Curtis Cup 2008

The United States hold a 4-2 lead over Great Britain and Ireland after the first day of the Curtis Cup match over the Old Course at St Andrews.

Scottish 16-year-old Sally Watson helped provide both GB&I’s points, pairing up with Michele Watson for success in foursomes and with Krystle Caithness for another win in the fourballs.

All three English players in the team were in action on the first day. Liz Bennett and Jodi Ewart took an early lead in their foursomes before being pulled back by their opposition.

Florentyna Parker teamed up with Breanne Loucks of Wales and bravely fought back from five down after 11 to lose only on the last green. Their foursomes opponents included America’s top college player, Amanda Blumenherst.

In the fourballs Liz Bennett and Florentyna Parker were paired together and held the advantage over the front nine. But their American opposition, who again included Blumenherst, took charge on the way home.
