Lu, who has four titles on the Asian Tour, has enjoyed some measure of success at the renowned Empire Hotel and Country Club, Jerudong, Brunei finishing tied third in last year’s Open.
The Danshu-based star will be hoping to emulate 2006 winner Wang Ter-chang and dethrone defending champion and compatriot Lin Wen-tang who will also feature in the prestigious US$300,000 Asian Tour event.
A strong field from Thailand is also expected to contend for the title including former Asian Tour number one Thaworn Wiratchant and Asian Tour winners Prom Meesawat, Chinnarat Phadungsil and Chawalit Plaphol.
The other title contenders include inaugural Brunei Open champion Terry Pilkadaris, Korea’s Noh Seung-yul, India’s Gaurav Ghei, Filipino Angelo Que, Scotsman Simon Yates and Malaysia’s Iain Steel.
As he has grown familiar to the Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course, Lu hopes to triumph at what he termed as one of his favourite destination in Asia.
While many his age would be contemplating a less hectic travelling schedule, Lu intends to keep playing on against the region’s stars on the Asian Tour, which will offer a record 29 events and over US$38 million in prize money this season.
After his seventh place finish last year, former winner Wang will be eyeing to repeat his 2006 winning performance.
Wang, who defeated Australia’s David Gleeson in a play-off in 2006, will be unfazed by the upcoming youngsters on the Asian Tour in his bid to launch a title charge at the Empire course.
