14 players to represent England at International European Amateur Championship at Esbjerg Golf Club

Eight members of the England team selected for next month’s Home Internationals are among a group of 14 players representing the EGU in the International European Amateur Championship at Esbjerg Golf Club, Denmark on 20th - 23rd August.

The eight from the Home Internationals team in Scotland are Tommy Fleetwood, Charlie Ford, Luke Goddard, Matt Haines, Sam Hutsby, Eddie Pepperell, Steven Uzzell and Dale Whitnell.
The rest of the squad is Jamie Abbott, Luke Collins, Andrew Cooley, Ryan Newman, Mark Thistleton and Adam Wainwright.
Fleetwood is the England Boy Captain who reached the final of the Amateur Championship this year, while Ford made his England debut in last year’s Home Internationals and was a member of this year’s European Men’s Team Championships squad.
Goddard, who will make his full England debut in the Home Internationals, has in recent weeks won the South of England Stroke Play Championship, finished runner-up in the Finnish Amateur, and was a quarter finalist in the English Amateur, while Haines won the Lytham Trophy in May and reached the last 16 of the English Amateur.
This year, Hutsby has won the Bernard Darwin Salver and was runner-up in the Welsh Open Stroke Play Championship and also reached the last 16 of the English Amateur, while Pepperell, who will also make his full England debut in the Home Internationals, finished runner-up in the McEvoy Trophy and Bernard Darwin Salver.
In a highly successful summer, Uzzell has won the Brabazon Trophy and the Russian Amateur and Whitnell, the Lagonda and Tillman Trophies as well as retaining the North of England Youths Championship,
Abbott has enjoyed high finishes in several events this year including runner-up in the Midland Amateur and third in the Welsh Stroke Play, Collins won the Berkshire Trophy and the Finnish Amateur last year, while Cooley won last year’s Italian Amateur and this year’s West of England Stroke Play.
Newman, 19, from Hertfordshire, is a comparative newcomer to the international scene. His best performance this year is runner-up in the West of England Stroke Play, while Thistleton is a former winner of the Lagonda Trophy.
Wainwright has enjoyed several high finishes this year including second individual spot in the Midland Qualifying plus three third places while he was equal 14th in the recent Czech Amateur.
Only two English players have won the European Amateur title, Jim Payne in 1991 and Matthew Richardson four years ago.
