27 year-old Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño of Spain (pictured below) will this week seek to become the first winner of the European Tour Madrid Masters, to be played in his home city, at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid.

The Spaniard comes into the tournament in great form and with his sights firmly set on securing his fifth European Tour title, having claimed his fourth at the recent Quinn Insurance British Masters at The Belfry, after beating Lee Westwood in a play-off.

Former US Open champion Angel Cabrera of Argentina and Germany’s Martin Kaymer are among the biggest names in the field looking to claim the majority of the €1 million prize fund. The field also includes home favourites José Maria Olazabal,  Pablo Larrazabal and Miguel Angel Jiménez.

Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, which was founded in 1932, is no stranger to hosting European Tour events, having staged the Open de España on eight occasions as well as the Open de Madrid five times, the last being in 2005 when Frenchman Raphaël Jacquelin romped to victory.
