Former Ryder Cup captain Ian Woosnam (pictured below) will attempt to all but seal his maiden John Jacobs Trophy against the stunning backdrop of Lake Garda when as the European Seniors Tour visits Italy for the penultimate tournament of the 2008 season.

The Welshman is currently €12,788 ahead of Bernhard Langer in the 2008 European Seniors Tour Order of Merit and victory at the Lake Garda Italian Seniors Open – and the €30,000 first prize -would see him open up an almost unassailable lead over the German and third place Gordon J Brand from England.

With just next month’s OKI Castellón Open España – Seniors Tour Championship remaining on the Seniors Tour Schedule after this week, it is an ideal opportunity for Woosnam to cap a marvellous rookie season.

He heads to the Palazzo Arzaga Hotel, Spa & Golf Resort chasing his third win of 2008, following victories at the Parkridge Polish Seniors Championship and the Russian Seniors Open.

Woosnam has also finished runner up on two occasions, at The Ryder Cup Wales Seniors Open behind Peter Mitchell and at the inaugural Casa Serena Open in the Czech Republic, where Langer won his maiden Seniors Tour title.

Sam Torrance of Scotland is hitting top form as the season reaches its finale, with his recent second place at the Scottish Seniors Open at Marriott Dalmahoy Golf & Country Club his best finish of 2008.

Mitchell, the winner of that tournament, is chasing his third win of the season and will be hoping to become the second player to win back-to-back Seniors Tour events this season after fellow Englishman Brand, who is also in the field this week.

Defending champion is New Zealand’s Simon Owen, who returns to defend his title this week.

Home favourite Costantino Rocca, who was named the European Senior Tour Rookie of the Year in 2007, will be keen to seal his first victory of 2008 on home soil.
