Peter Mitchell moves into tie for lead at Lake Garda Italian Seniors Open

Peter Mitchell from England carded a fine five under par 67 to claim a share of the lead alongside Chile’s Guillermo Encina after the second round of the Lake Garda Italian Seniors Open at Palazzo Arzaga Hotel, Spa and Golf Resort.

Mitchell and Encina go into the final round on nine under par 135 and with a single shot lead over England’s Gordon J. Brand and Spaniard Emilio Rodriguez who stormed through the field with a spectacular nine under par 63 that included no less than ten birdies.

Ian Woosnam, the European Seniors Tour Order of Merit leader, is also still very much in contention. The Welsh former Ryder Cup captain carded a superb seven under par 65 that saw him jump up from 23rd place into a tie for fifth alongside local favourite Costantino Rocca on seven under par 137.

Brand is currently in third place on the money list after consecutive wins at the De Vere PGA Seniors Championship and the Travis Perkins plc Senior Masters and is in perfect place to claim a third victory after a seven under par 65 that included eight birdies.

Rodriguez came into the event languishing in 54th place on the Order of Merit but now has a great chance to avoid a trip to the dreaded Tour School.

Meanwhile the biggest galleries of the day went out with local hero, Rocca, who repaid them with three birdies and an eagle on the 539-yard par-5 11th.
