Three new venues announced for Open Championship Regional Qualifying

Clitheroe, East Sussex National and The London Club will all host Open Championship Regional Qualifying for the first time in 2010, as the three clubs join the roster of 16 venues chosen for that 150th anniversary Open at St Andrews.

Open heroics from Chris Wood moves him up to 2nd place in R&A Mens World Rankings

20 year old English Amateur golfer Chris Wood from Long Ashton Golf Club, who came fifth at The Open, rose to the second spot in the World Amateur Golf Ranking on the back of his performance at Royal Birkdale.

Chris Wood of England has moved WAGR No 12.

201,000 people attended The Open at Royal Birkdale in appalling weather

Despite the appalling weather that prevailed for much of the week, 201,000 people attended the 137th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale. This puts the attendance in the top three of all time for an Open held away from St Andrews.

Also, an estimated 30,000 people enjoyed fish and chips at Birkdale during the course of the week.

For all that, it was the excitement of the golf tournament itself that will be most remembered, with all talk of the absence of Tiger Woods being forgotten long before the drama came to a conclusion, and it will come to be remembered as one of the really great Opens of recent years.

Duo of Double Whammies for Padraig Harrington on way to successfully defending The Open at Birkdale

Ireland’s Padraig Harrington repeated last year’s achievement of winning the Irish PGA Championship before going on to win the British Open.

At Royal Birkdale Golf Club today, Harrington started the final round two strokes behind former winner Greg Norman from Australia. The Irishman posted a final round of one under par 69 in blustery conditions for a +3 total of 283 for victory by four strokes from Ian Poulter of England. This included an awesome back nine of four under par of 32 which included him being -4 for the last six holes.

By the time 53 year old Greg Norman had claimed the lead going into today’s final day of the British Open, he had already done wonders for the game of golf.

Popeye to hit 1st ball at THE OPEN at Royal Birkdale Golf Club

Drama as Padraig could join Luke Donald on sidelines at THE OPEN GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP

Following on from Luke Donald pulling out of The Open Golf Championship with a wrist injury and looking as though his Ryder Cup team place challenge had ended, there was immediate drama with news that defending champion Padraig Harrington has a right wrist injury which, he said, would prevent him even starting any other tournament than this one.
