Englishman Justin Rose, the heroic teenage amateur who set the crowds alight by finishing fourth at Royal Birkdale in the 1998 Open Championship, is now back, ten years on as a seasoned pro, hoping he can recreate some of the magic.

He says that while he can draw inspiration from that performance - where he finished fourth, just one stroke behind Tiger Woods - he should now be capable of going slightly better. He said: “Even par? I’ve got to believe that if I put just a little bit of my approach from ‘98 into my game now hopefully I can go alittle better.”

Open Championship Latest: Strong Winds Forecast For British Open At Royal Birkdale

Posted by Big G under Latest Golf News, Mens Pro Golf, The Four Majors, The Open Championship

The strong wind, which is forecast to continue through the weekend, has been a big topic amomg the players. Below pictured Steve Stricker, the experienced American who tied eighth at Carnoustie last year, was one of many to comment. He said: “All the par threes are in some sort of crosswind. You can just imagine where they are going to put some of those pins, so the ability to get it close is going to be very tough. And if it rains as well? Well if it’s like today you couldn’t even get an umbrella up. That’s pretty tough!”

It will be very interesting to see who wins this year’s Open Golf Championship in the absence of Tiger Woods. I strongly fancy Sergio Garcia to win closely followed by Geoff Ogilvie. American and former Claret Jug winner Justin Leonard representys great each-way value at 45/1.
