Scott Borrowman and Laura Murray win R&A Foundation Bursars’ Tournament at St Andrews

Scott Borrowman and Laura Murray were the two winners in a very closely-fought R&A Foundation Bursars’ Tournament, held in St Andrews on 7-8 April. Borrowman, of Stirling University, shot rounds of 71, 70 and 70 for a total of 211, while Murray, of Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, shot three consecutive scores of 73 to finish on 219.

Stanford University Successfully Defend Hawaii-Hilo Mens Intercollegiate Golf Championship

Waikoloa Village Golf Course in Hawaii

Number 10 ranked Stanford University opened its spring season with a successful title defence Friday at the Hawaii-Hilo Intercollegiate.

The team shot a final-round 275 to finish at 27-under 813, three shots ahead of Pac-10 rivals Arizona State University (273) and University of South California (272).

Arizona State freshman Jesper Kennegard shot a final-round 66 to win medalist honors at 13-under 197. Stanford teammates Rob Grube (pictured above)  and Sihwan Kim tied for second at 11 under par.

Florida lead NCAA Mens Division 1 2008 Sun Trust Gator Inviational event

The Florida University mens collegiate golf team lead neighbourly rivals Florida State University by nine strokes after round 1 of the 2008 Sun Trust Gator Invitational held at Mark Bostik Golf Course, Florida.

The Florida team scores consisted of the above pictured, Tyson Alexander (66),  Will Strickler (73),  Manuel Villegas (73), Billy Horschel (67) & Toby Ragland (69).

Historic Glasgow Gailes Golf Links to host 2008 Palmer Cup

College golf’s Ryder Cup-style competition set for June 26-27

This year’s Palmer Cup, a transatlantic men’s student golf match which started in 1997 shall be hosted by Glasgow Golf Club and played around the historic Glasgow Gailes Golf Links.

The annual Ryder Cup-style competition will be played June 26-27, on the 6,903 yard, par 71 Willie Park Junior design when the top collegiate players from the United States tee off against their counterparts from Europe. The Americans lead the series, 6-4-1, but have lost the last two competitions in Europe.

Record number of R&A individual bursars for 2008

 A record number of 91 students will receive Foundation Bursary funding this year from The R&A. Individual bursaries range from £500 to £3,000. Students from Belgium, Iceland, Italy, New Zealand and Zambia are among those awarded bursaries to enable golfers to combine their studies with competitive play.

The R&A’s total annual spend on university golf currently exceeds £320,000 and includes grants to support golf programmes at 12 universities in Great Britain and Ireland.
