The Palmer Cup, an annual match played between American and European students, has been won by the USA at Caves Valley near Baltimore in Maryland by a convincing 18-6 margin.

The match was played over two days of fourball, foursomes and singles matches and Arnold Palmer hosted a dinner on the eve of the competition. Gordon Yates, winner of this year’s R&A Foundation bursars competition at St Andrews, was a member of the European team, gaining one point from four matches. He is a student at the University of Stirling and a member of Hilton Park.

The match was first held in 1997 at Bay Hill in Florida, Arnold Palmer’s home club, and those who have played include former Open champion Ben Curtis, Ryder Cup team members JJ Henry and Luke Donald, and current US Amateur champion Richie Ramsay.

The R&A supported the event with a grant of £5,000 and Director of Golf Development, Duncan Weir, said: “This is a very worthwhile match between students born in Europe and those from the United States. When you look at the list of players it gives a clear indication of the wealth of talent now playing university golf.”

The 2008 match will be played at Glasgow Gailes on Scotland’s west coast.

US WIN BACK THE PALMER CUP

Posted by Big G under Student Golf, UK Varsity, USA Collegiate

Former ETSU star Rhys Davies (Bridgend, Wales) (below) defeated Ben Hogan Award winner Chris Kirk 4-and-2 in Friday afternoon’s single matches, but that victory was one of only two singles match victories for the Europeans, as the United States claimed six of the eight final session singles matches to post an 18-6 victory at the Palmer Cup presented by Monster at Caves Valley Golf Club. The win moves the all-time series to 6-4-1 in favor of the Americans.
