New golf series for Central juniors

A new series of four competitions, designed to encourage the area’s children to take part in golf competitions, has been launched to run throughout the golf season at venues across Central Scotland this year.

College golf’s Ryder Cup-style competition set for June 26-27

This year’s Palmer Cup, a transatlantic men’s student golf match which started in 1997 shall be hosted by Glasgow Golf Club and played around the historic Glasgow Gailes Golf Links.

The annual Ryder Cup-style competition will be played June 26-27, on the 6,903 yard, par 71 Willie Park Junior design when the top collegiate players from the United States tee off against their counterparts from Europe. The Americans lead the series, 6-4-1, but have lost the last two competitions in Europe.

26,000 nine year olds introduced to golf in Scotland during 2007

Since Colin Montgomerie launched clubgolf at Gleneagles in 2003, increasing numbers of P5 children have been introduced to golf at school through firstclubgolf, which uses multi-coloured clubs, rubberised balls and Velcro targets.

This year alone 26,000 of all nine year olds in Scotland played firstclubgolf.

The groups for the 2008 Scottish Golf Union Men’s Area Golf Team Championship are detailed below.

Tain Golf Club. Hole 11

The final shall be played at Tain Golf Club, Ross-shire, (11th hole pictured above) a traditional Scottish Highland links course designed by Old Tom Morris, situated 9 miles south of Dornoch and 31 miles north of Inverness.
