IT has been a common passion that has brought Bob Robertson closer to his 20-year-old grandson Daniel.

The 51-year age gap between the two has not stopped them becoming close competitors on the golf course, where they do battle at least once a week.

But when Mr Robertson made it to his first competition final, he never expected to be pitched against his grandson for the prestigious trophy.

THREE PAST MAJOR WINNERS ENTER FOR SENIORS OPEN AT MUIRFIELD

The 2007 Senior Open Championship at Muirfield Golf Club presented by Aberdeen Asset Management

Wayne Grady, Tony Jacklin and Mark O’Meara (below) are the latest Major Champions to enter The 2007 Senior Open Championship, presented by Aberdeen Asset Management, which will be played at Muirfield for the first time from July 26-29.

Grady, winner of the 1990 US PGA Championship, celebrates his 50th birthday on the first day of the Championship and has chosen to swap his place in the Sky television commentary box for a place in the 144 man field alongside the cream of international Seniors golfing talent.

The inclusion of Jacklin, winner of The Open Championship in 1969 and the US Open the following year, and O’Meara, who captured both the Claret Jug and the Masters Tournament during 1998, takes to 13 the number of past Major winners confirmed for the US$2,000,000 Championship.

Six-time Major Champion Nick Faldo, who registered two of his three Open victories at Muirfield, is another making his Seniors debut at the famous East Lothian venue where he will be joined by Bob Charles, Ben Crenshaw, Tom Kite, John Mahaffey, Jerry Pate, Gary Player (the only man to have won The Senior Open Championship on three occasions), Scott Simpson, Craig Stadler and Tom Watson.

“I am truly delighted to be going back to Muirfield once again,” remarked Faldo. “Every return visit rekindles fantastic memories for me but, at the same time, it does come as a bit of a shock that so much time has gone by since my first Major success in 1987. It will certainly be a special week being the 20th anniversary of that victory, that’s for sure.”

Faldo, of course, is also looking forward to captaining the European Team for The 2008 Ryder Cup at Valhalla, an honour which makes him the seventh Ryder Cup Captain in this year’s Senior Open Championship field after Crenshaw (1999), Jacklin (1983, ‘85, ‘87, ‘89), Mark James (1999), Kite (1997), Sam Torrance (2002), and Watson (1993).

Last year’s Senior Open Championship, presented by Aberdeen Asset Management, was won by former United States Ryder Cup player Loren Roberts, who defeated Eduardo Romero of Argentina on the first play-off hole at The Westin Turnberry Resort. Americans Dick Mast and Craig Stadler were third and fourth respectively.

Tickets for the 2007 edition can be purchased in advance by visiting The European Tour Ticketing Operation at www.europeantourtickets.com or by calling the Ticket Hotline on 0800 023 2557.

An adult season ticket (which allows entry to the course on all four tournament days plus the practice day on Wednesday July 25) costs £50 if purchased before July 1. Any one-day ticket costs £15 and entry to the practice day is £10. After July 1 the charges are £60 for a season pass and £20 for any one-day ticket.

There is no entry charge for U-16s, providing an adult accompanies them, and car parking is also free.
