In the absence of Tiger Woods, John Daly is the big draw at the USPGA Championship

Posted by Big G under Latest Golf News, Mens Pro Golf, My Golf Returns, The Four Majors, USPGA Golf Championship

It’s been 17 years since John Daly, strode up the 18th fairway at Crooked Stick, a shock winner of the USPGA Championship. And it’s 13 years since he pulled off another stunner, winning the British Open at, of all places, St. Andrews - but despite these facts, Daly is still one of the crowds favourites. This probably due to his non-conventional cavalier approach to the game and the vast distnces he hits the golf ball.

201,000 people attended The Open at Royal Birkdale in appalling weather

Posted by Big G under Latest Golf News, The Four Majors, The Open Championship

Despite the appalling weather that prevailed for much of the week, 201,000 people attended the 137th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale. This puts the attendance in the top three of all time for an Open held away from St Andrews.

Also, an estimated 30,000 people enjoyed fish and chips at Birkdale during the course of the week.

For all that, it was the excitement of the golf tournament itself that will be most remembered, with all talk of the absence of Tiger Woods being forgotten long before the drama came to a conclusion, and it will come to be remembered as one of the really great Opens of recent years.
