History
Students Matchplay started as an idea of competitive golf for international university golf teams during an intra-faculty golf match in late October of 2005. The Wittelsbacher GC Rohrenfeld-Neuburg was the only club in the area to support our idea, to which the golfers of University of Warwick were the first to enter in early 2006. At the end there were some 40 golfers from 10 universities from 5 nations. After a close match between Catholic University Eichstaett-Ingolstadt and Warwick and two extra sudden death holes Eichstaett-Ingolstadt won the first competition themselves.
In 2007 nearly 100 golfers from 23 universities from 10 countries and 3 continents played at the Students Matchplay. In 2009 the golfers from the University of Warwick started to host the first regional qualifier to the Students Matchplay tournament on the Arden Course of the Marriott Forest of Arden Hotel & Country Club. In 2010 the golfers from Ingolstadt and Warwick plan to start a second regional qualifier for Austrian university golfers on the GC am Mondsee.
The Students Matchplay is unique as university teams play against each other. Next to the Boyd Quaich of University of St.Andrews, the FISU University Golf World Championships, the EUC European University Golf Championships and the Golf Tournament of the Universidade it is one of the few international tournaments in world university golf.
The Students Matchplay Tournament is organized by students of various academic backgrounds from Ingolstadt (GER) and Warwick (ENG).
