2010 US PGA Championship at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin invite for Ryder Cup Vice-Captain Darren Clarke

2010 Ryder Cup vice-captain Darren Clarke of Ireland has been invited to compete at the US PGA Championship for the second year running.

The Irishman shall take his place in the field for the final golf major of the year which takes place in two weeks' time at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin, USA.

The course brings back mixed memories for the Dungannon player.

When the event was last staged there in 2004 Clarke shot 65 to lead on the first day, was joint third with a round to go, but then shot 76 to finish 13th.

"It's fantastic news - I'm absolutely delighted and feel very privileged and fortunate," said Clarke, who currently lies 21st in the Ryder Cup points table.

Asked for his main memory of Whistling Straits, he added: "A shank on the short 17th in the third round - a really bad one. I did well to make bogey."

Clarke recently finished second in the 2010 Scottish Open at Loch Lomond Golf Club and also produced a creditable performance at the  2010 Open Championship at St Andrews; and is up with the leaders after the opening round of the 2010 Irish Open at Killarney Golf & Fishing Club.
