Amateur Golf - Matt Haines beats Tommy Fleetwood at the 37th hole to win the Spanish Golf Championship

Englishman Matthew Haines from Kent beat compatriot Tommy Haines of Formby Hall Golf Club at the 37th hole in a marathon tie to win the 2010 Spanish Mens Amateur Golf International Championship for the La Copa de SM El Rey at La Canada Golf Club, Costa Del Sol, Southern Spain earlier today.
In a high standard match played in poor weather, Walker Cup player Haines went into lunch 2up but his English Golf Union team-mate fought back to take the tie to the 1st extra hole before Haines was crowned champion.
Haines, delivered as number 1 seed after leading the 36 holes strokeplay qualifiers which is highly unusual as the leading qualifiers are normally unable to sustain the same standard of play during the matchplay stages.
Our congratulations go to to Matt and Tommy for what was a very close contest. I'm quite sure it won't be vlong before Tommy finds himself in the winning enclosure during 2010.
