Chris Naegel leads after 54 holes of the E-Golf Tour Oldfield Open 2012 in Okatie, SC
Saturday, 25 February 2012
Please find below the third-round wrap and results from the eGolf Tour's Oldfield Open, contested this week at Oldfield Country Club and Chechessee Creek Club in Okatie, SC.
Chris Naegel (Chesterfield, MO) entered Friday's third round in a three-way tie for the lead at 6-under 136, and left in sole possession of the tournament's 54-hole lead following a 3-under 69 amidst arduous conditions that featured wind gusts of up to 30 mph. The former Missouri Baptist University golfer birdied four of his first 12 holes to move to 10-under for the week, but bogeyed the docile par-4 15th to fall back to 9-under overall, where he eventually finished. The tournament lead is the first for the 29-year-old Naegel since his days at Missouri Baptist, where he graduated in 2007.
Trailing Naegel by one shot at 8-under 206 are Will Collins (Salisbury, NC) and Brazil's Fernando Mechereffe (Charlotte, NC).
Collins, a former University of Virginia standout, has quickly made an impression through just two starts on the year. At last week’s Palmetto Hall event, Collins recorded a video-game-like 10 birdies during a final-round 65 that moved the newcomer from T53 to T14 in his pro debut. His stellar play from Hilton Head Island carried over into this week’s event, especially into Friday’s round, where he birdied five of his first eight holes en route to a 5-under 67.
Mechereffe, a Brazil native who has lived in Charlotte, NC for a number of years, is without doubt the best player yet to win on the eGolf Tour, and is at the same time one of the tour’s longest tenured members. A conditional member of the 2012 Nationwide Tour, Mechereffe is looking to add an eGolf Tour title to his resume before the PGA TOUR’s minor league circuit returns to the United States.
On Friday, the former N.C. State “All American” birdied three of his first eight holes en route to a front-nine 33 and an 8-under tally on the week. Much like Collins, Mechereffe’s early move was stalled by the increased winds on Oldfield’s closing nine, which left him with bogeys at 10 and 14 to offset birdies at 11 and 12. Pars over his last four holes gave Mechereffe a third-round 69 and an 8-under 206 total through 54 holes.
While still looking for his first tour title, Mechereffe is coming off of a career year on tour, having posted eight top-10 finishes in just 15 starts, and collecting $76,977 in earnings to finish fifth on the season-ending money list.
