Disabled golfers from Scotland and England enjoy golf training days in Fife
Sunday, 31 July 2011
The Cluny Golf Centre near Kirkcaldy and the St Michaels Golf Club in Leuchars, were the venues for a golf training day and two golf competitions for disabled golfers from Scotland and England this
week.
Attendees were primarily raising funds for Sense Scotland, but many differing charities and voluntary groups came together to support the group and raise much needed funds for Sense Scotland's
continuing work with children and young people with disabilities.
Jim Gales the event organiser said, "We received several grants from Trust Funds and Foundations from across Scotland to provide some training and tuition for anyone with a disability and it was
great that so many youngsters and beginners came along for the day. We made sure there were no restrictions on either levels of disabilities or golfing ability, so making sure that anyone and
everyone could give it a go".
Several charities and voluntary groups were involved with the two day event and included, Scottish Disability Golf, Capability Scotland, the Vision Impaired Scottish Golf Alliance, Chest, Heart and
Stroke Scotland, VONEF and Sense Scotland. Combined with a recent fund raiser held at the Balmoral Estates Golf Club near Ballater, the golfers have raised just over £3,500 for Sense Scotland.
The golfers attending began the first day with a golf lesson, provided by Craig Donnelly and his PGA team at the Cluny Centre, which ironed out a lot of the bad habits of the established golfers and
their coaches. A good lunch was followed by another tuition session for the two dozen or so youngsters and beginners to the game and a round of golf on the adjacent course for the more
established players. Rain sadly made its presence felt, but the golfers managed to finish their Scramble Team event with the following results:
1st with 59.2 points was team 1 - Garry McNulty of Glasgow, John Pennycott of Arran and Peter Osborne of Lancaster.
2nd with 61 points was team 4 - Steve Bramwell of Johnstone, Colin Brock of Fife and Davey More of Edinburgh.
3rd with 61.2 points was team 2 - Jim Gales of Fife, Paul Shepherd of Fife and Jim Davidson of Glasgow.
The participants then moved along to Glenrothes to an evening's social gathering and meal, before staying overnight in a hotel and then heading to St Michaels Golf Club after breakfast the next day.
Better weather greeted the players and coaches and Scottish Disability Golf ran one of their Order of Merit championship rounds for the year, over the very picturesque but challenging course. The
weather remained good for the day and their post-golf meal was taken outdoors for the first time this year. SDGP scores on the day were as follows:
1st Colin Brock of Fife 40 stableford points
2nd John Pennycott of Arran with 36 points
3rd Jim Davidson of Glasgow with 34 points
Team results on the day were:
1st was team 1 with 95 points - Peter Osborne of Lancaster, John Pennycott of Arran and Stewart
Copland of Johnstone.
2nd team 3 84 points - Colin Brock of Fife, Steve Bramwell of Johnstone and Davey More of Edinburgh.
Joint 3rd were teams 4 - Andy Hughes of Paisley, Jim Currie of Fife, Stevie Cunningham of Newton and Jim Davidson of Glasgow, along with Team 5, also with 72 points - Daniel Harper of Dunblane, Garry
McNulty of Glasgow, Malcolm Gerdes-Hansen of Fife and Robert Miller of Fife.
The organising team would like to thank the owners at Cluny and the Club Council at St Michaels for their generosity and support, without which such an event would not be possible or such a success.
The SDGP now moves on to two events in August at Dalmahoy in Edinburgh and the Kittocks in St Andrews and full details on all the SDGP fixtures, can be found at www.sdgp.co.uk.
