Former British Boys Champion Jordan Findlay of Fraserburgh Golf Club heavily defeated Myles Cunningham of Craigielaw Golf Club by 6/5 to advance to the quarter-finals of the Allied Surveyors 2010 Scottish Amateur Golf Championship at Gullane Golf Course.

The 22-year-old, coached by Bob Torrance,  enjoyed a comfortable passage to the last eight with birdies at the 3rd and the 6th holes to mover two up, and this increased to a three hole advantage when Cunningham concede the 7th hole. Regulation figures at the 9th and 10th holes were good enough to stretch the lead to five holes and the result was never in doubt from there.

Findlay’s former East Tennessee State University Golf team-mate Michael Stewart is also through to the quarter-finals after an impressive 3&2 win over fellow Ayrshireman Jamie MacKay, which was highlighted by an eagle two at the seventh hole. Stewart is now 16-under-par for four matches.

Number one seed James Byrne of Banchory Golf Club edged a very close tie by one hole against SGU Order of Merit Newlands Trophy winner Allyn Dick of Kingsknowe Golf Club.  Dick fought back from four down after eight holes to draw level with a birdie at the 15th hole, but a  three-putt at the 17th hole was his down-fall as Byrne made it through to the round of 8.

Byrne, now faces Royal Troon Golf Club’s Michael Smyth, who won a close tie against number eight seed Greg Paterson of St Andrews.

John Duff of Newmachar Golf Club, a final year computer studies student at Aberdeen University, enjoyed his second extra holes victory of the day with a narrow extra hole birdie win over Colin Baird. Duff, now faces fellow North East golfer Findlay.

Defending champion David Law’s dreams of a Scottish Amateur double were ended by 17 year-old  Scotland Boys Golf cap Liam Johnston.

U.S College Golf student Jordan McColl of Scotscraig Golf Club heavily defeated 46-year-old Nicky Gold by 5&4 to reach the last eight, while East Lothian will have one representative in the quarter-finals after Dunbar Golf Club’s Stephen Neilson ousted 2007 Scottish Boys Champion Paul Ferrier on the final hole.
