James Vargas (Miami, FL) and Eric Atsma (Caledonia, MI) share the clubhouse lead of nine-under par 133 after Friday’s second round of  the Victoria Texas Open presented by Jim and Carol West at Victoria Country Club.

Atsma bettered his opening day score of three-under par 68 with a low round score of six-under par 65 Friday, while Vargas was able to move up the leader board on Friday with a bogey free four-under par 67.

The pair holds a two stroke lead over a group of five golfers. The group includes former Rice golfer Parker LaBarge (St. Louis, MO), Michael Schachner (Libertyville, IL), Andrew Lanahan (Jacksonville, FL), Philip Pettitt Jr (Murfreesboro, TN) and Bryce Easton (Arlington, TX).

Former Victoria native Richard Swift posted an even par 71 on Friday but will miss the cut with a two day total of two-over par 144. Current Victoria Country Club assistant professional Joe Mitchell Jr. opened with two-over par 73 on Thursday but a disappointing five-over par 76 on Friday dropped him to seven-over par 149, while Victoria amateur Perry Farley struggled with back to back 82’s for a two day total of twenty-two –over par 164.

The cutline fell at one-over par 143 with sixty-two golfers making the weekend portion of the Victoria Texas Open. Round three will begin at 7:00 am Saturday morning with groups going off both one and ten. The leaders will tee off number one at 8:40 am.

The total purse for the Victoria Texas Open is $200,000 with $30,000 going to the winner.
