Jeff Curl wins EGOLF Tarheel Tour Walnut Creek Open after play-off with Kevin Kisner
Wednesday, 15 April 2009
Jeff Curl of Ellington, CT sank a 3-foot birdie putt against Kevin Kisner of Aiken, SC on the second play-off hole for victory at the EGOLF Tarheel Tour’s Walnut Creek Open in Goldsboro, NC.
Curl entered the final round trailing overnight leader Kevin Kisner of Aiken, SC by a single shot and a final round of 66 against Kisner’s 67 resulted in both players being tied on -16 197, one stroke ahead of Chip Deason and Scott Brown.
Curl and Kisner exchanged birdies on the first play-off hole, the par-4 18th, and headed to No. 10 to continue the overtime session. Curl stuck a sand wedge to three feet and holed the putt to collect the win and the $26,000 first-place cheque.
The victory was especially nice for Curl as his father Rod, winner of the Colonial National Invitation in 1974, was on the bag for his son this week and was his steady head at the end of regulation.
For Kisner, the runner-up finish kept his confidence high with PGA Tour Qualifying School around the corner, but the loss was not easy to swallow.
