Colombia’s Jose Manuel Garrido birdied his final two holes of the day to secure a bogey-free 8-under par 64 and the opening round lead at the ‘63º Abierto de Colombia presentado por Arturo Calle Golf’ – the Colombia National Open Championship.

Organized by the Golf Federation of Colombia and sanctioned by the Tour de las Americas, the tournament got off to a promising start today at the CC Guaymaral’s course No 2 in the capital city of Bogota.

Garrido, current leader of the Colombian Tour money list and fifteenth on the TLA Order of Merit, moved ahead late in the afternoon. His opening round starting at noon from the tenth tee and featuring eight birdies on holes 10, 13, 14, 16, 3, 4, 8 and 9 – 32’s on both nines.

Such a consistent and impeccable display allowed Garrido to outshine his countryman Oscar Alvarez and Argentina’s Rafael Gomez and Julian Etulain. They posted rounds of 7-under par 65 to finish the day in a three-way tie for second.

Two strokes behind the leader, the fifth place is shared by Argentinean veteran Miguel Guzman and locals Sergio Diaz, Nelson Guasca and Santiago Rivas. The top 10 also includes a group of six players tied for ninth – among them Mexico’s Oscar Serna, Venezuela’s Alfredo Adrian and Argentina’s Luciano Giometti.

Known as one of the toughest golf courses in Colombia, the 7,356-yard par-72 course No 2 at the CC Guaymaral played soft due to rain the night before the start of the event. Such conditions allowed plenty of birdies for seventy players to finish the first round under par.
