Two of Australia’s young guns Kevin Marques of Queensland and Dimitrios Papadatos of NSW combined to take out the 2011 Australian Men’s Amateur Foursomes Championship at Riverdale Golf Club, Melbourne, today.

They shot 8 under par 136 to win the title by four shots from Singaporean pair Gregory Foo and Jerome Ng and New South Welshmen Matt Steiger and Brett Drewitt tied for second.

Queensland’s Chris Wood and Cameron Powell followed with 141, ahead of Victoria’s Ryan Lynch and Chris Wood (142).

All the players will be seeking to add the 116th Riversdale Cup to their name which gets underway on Friday.

Current British Amateur champion and Riversdale Cup holder Jin Jeong will defend his title in a field of 156 national and international players, comprising 30 with handicaps of plus three or better.

The talented Waverley Club-based Jin took the title last year and helped Waverley to their 2010 Division 1 Pennant is seeking to be one of the few to have won the Cup back-to-back.

Organisers believe the field is one of the most talented in the past 15 years, with a strong contingent of international players from England, the US, Switzerland, Italy, Malaysia, New Zealand and Singapore.

Among them is talented English golfer David Coupland who has joined the Waverley Div 1 Pennant team this year. He is 14th on the EGU Order of Merit and off a handicap of plus 3.3.
