Monday, 8 February 2010
Golfing legend, Gary Wolstenholme, is leaving the amateur golf tour to focus all of his efforts on the illustrious professional tour. Wolstenholme took time out from signing with sports and celebrity management specialists, Champions (UK) PLC, to reveal how he is going to make the transition.

Wolstenholme will aim to continue his success from the amateur game on the European Senior’s Tour later this year when he turns 50. Having spent the majority of his career within the amateur game, Wolstenholme is excited at the prospect of playing on the professional tour.
Golfing legend Wolstenholme was introduced to Champions by another great sporting legend; Willie Thorne. The long-established sports management company currently represent several other celebrities including former England goalkeeper Peter Shilton OBE and Coronation Street’s William Roache MBE.
Since becoming the Amateur Champion of Great Britain in 1991 Gary has gone on to compete in 6 Walker Cups, becoming the highest point scorer for Great Britain and Ireland in the history of the competition and is the most capped golfer of all time.
During his illustrious amateur career he has also competed at several of the professional majors, including; the US Open Championship in 2008, the US Masters in both 1999 and 2004 and the Open Championship at Royal St George’s in 2003. In 2007 he received an MBE in the Queen’s New Years Honours list for Services to Sport.
Back in 1995, Wolstenholme beat an unknown Tiger Woods in a Walker Cup Singles Match and recently beat Current World number 22 Anthony Kim in 2005 at the Chicago Golf Club.
Despite such an illustrious career in the amateur game Wolstenholme is keen to challenge himself further and play on the professional tour.
Wolstenholme said:
“I am looking forward to the challenge that the professional game has to offer. I recognise that I have a lot to prove so I just have to go out and play to the best of my ability.”
He went on to say: “There are many aspects I will miss from the amateur game, I loved representing my country and being a part of a team. I am feeling extremely enthusiastic about playing golf in general and believe that I can be rewarded in the professional game for all the hard work and time I devoted as a amateur game”.
