Nigel Duke wins 2011 Connacht Seniors Open Golf Championship at Castle Dargan GC

Bookmark and Share

Castle Dargan Golf Club in Sligo played host to a most enjoyable and entertaining 2011 Connacht Seniors Open and after solid rounds of 73, 74 for 147 Killiney's Nigel Duke finished 1 stroke clear of Killeen's Maurice Kelly 148 (76, 72).

The event was sponsored by Nevada Bob's Golf Store who were represented by Sligo Store Manager, David McQuillan.

Duke began the second round in second place, one shot behind overnight leader and former winner, Cork's Peter Cowley. Cowley still looked an odds on winner with 5 to go only to run up a +5, 9 on the treacherous par 4 14th to see his chances evaporate.

Duke's nearest challenger was playing partner Maurice Kelly who carefully plotted his way to a level Par 72, but it was to be Nigel's day when he closed with a +1, 73.

Spare a thought for Woodbrook's John L. Hughes who, an early starter, posted a best of the event -2, 70 to an opening 79 for third spot on 149. Hughes was leader in the Clubhouse for over 5 hours until Duke and Kelly both passed him in the penultimate threeball.

Great credit where its due to the Course Staff at Castle Dargan under the stewardship of Superintendent, Graham Beatt, who coped with copious amounts of overnight rain to still turn out the fine Darren Clarke stadium venue at its best.
