Scottish Disability Golf Partnership receive a warm welcome at Charleton Golf Club
Saturday, 23 April 2011
Disabled members and coaches of the Scottish Disability Golf Partnership accepted an invitation from Charleton Golf club, to play in a brand new match. Players from across Scotland travelled to Colinsburgh in Fife to play a stableford competition over eighteen holes and some twenty eight golfers participated for the inaugural Challenge Trophy.
The SDGP provided the new event trophy and prizes were awarded for the best three returned scores for the SDGP players, coaches and Charleton members, with an additional prize of a fourball being awarded for the best tee time four player score. Ruairidh Deans of Kilconquhar, an SDGP member and also a Special Olympic competitor ran out the overall individual winner with forty one stableford points.
The Charleton Club members took the Challenge Trophy with a significant victory, by a six games to one scoreline.
The Club Captain said, "We had a great day with the guys from the SDGP, smashing weather and a lot of good humour and banter between the groups. Charleton Golf Club will make this an annual event and get more involved with the match next year".
Laura Paterson, the Club Manager said, "It was great to see the SDGP back at the club and to have a good friendly game. Its always nice to have competitions and major events, but we at the club like to see big groups just go out and enjoy our golf course".
Stevie Cunningham the SDGP's Vice Chairman, who presented the Challenge Trophy to the Charleton Captain, said, "The SDGP now provides more golf competition and golf training than any other disabled group in the United Kingdom and our membership of junior, seniors and coaches is growing rapidly. We now have several hundred people who regularly come along to our free training events and games each year.
The Scottish Disability Golf Partnership, are well into their arrangements for the biggest ever disabled team, Ryder Cup event, taking place at the Westerwood Resort and Hotel this July. Each of the 4 teams participating in this inaugural event will have 12 golfers and be played over 4 days.
Participants will include golfers with all types of disabilities, like amputees, the deaf, blind and those with learning disabilities, as well as wheelchair users. The World Team Cup will follow a brand new 3-day Scottish Championship at the Dullatur Golf Club and, thanks to some wonderful support from the 2 host golf clubs and strong sponsorship from across Scotland the SDGP is pulling together a package of golf, a week's hotel stay, and food and golf carts for golfers from around the world. There are still a couple of spaces available on the World squad for any disabled golfer who might be interested?
The SDGP now moves on to games at Lothianburn, Pumpherston and Alloa. More information on all these events can be found at www.sdgp.co.uk. or by email at info@sdgp.co.uk.
