St Mellion International Resort tour player secures 2010 European Tour card in dramatic fashion
Monday, 21 December 2009
Pictured European Tour golfer Scott Drummond, who represents St Mellion International on Tour, has secured his 2010 playing card on the PGA European Tour, with a dramatic last-hole shot of a lifetime.
Faced with a difficult 25-yard chip from off the green, on the final hole of the final stage of the gruelling 108-hole European Tour Qualifying School, Drummond knew he had to come up with an all-or-nothing shot for a birdie to stand a chance of a top-30 finish, and to regain his playing privileges on Tour.
“I knew it was do or die,” said the Plymouth-based 35 year old. “I told my caddy Kevin Jones that we hadn’t had a chip-in all week, and what a story it would be if we made this one. So I went through my routine, hit it pure, the ball bounced straight and we both knew it had a chance.
“It checked up with the spin, and dropped dead centre of the cup.”
The wonder shot was good enough to secure joint 25th spot for Drummond, although the golfer faced a nervous 15-minute wait for other players to finish before he could relax and enjoy the moment.
“When it went in we celebrated all right, but we held back a little because there were still players out on the course,” he said. “It was a huge relief when it was confirmed that the shot had earnt me back my Tour card – which is massively important to those of us who make our living in professional tournament golf.”
Q School was held at PGA Golf de Catalunya in Spain in December. The leading 30 players (and ties) earnt Membership of The European Tour for 2010.
Drummond now hopes to get back to winning form on Tour in 2010. His biggest victory to date, the 2004 PGA Championship (the Tour’s flagship event), gave the Shropshire-born golfer a springboard to build on, and five seasons later he finished 2009 in strong form, with a succession of top 15 finishes including the Portugal Masters, the UBS Hong Kong Open and the prestigious Mercedes-Benz Championship in Germany.
With over £1.5 million career earnings Drummond is one of the Tour’s better-known stars, and will be a frequent visitor to St Mellion International during 2010.
“After Q School I took a short break from the game, and I am now working hard on fitness through the winter part of the season,” he said. “I will play around 25 events on Tour next year, and I will make good use of the excellent practice facilities at St Mellion International – as well as honing my golf on the very challenging Nicklaus Signature Course, which we all recognise as one of Europe’s very best golf courses.”
St Mellion International Resort has recently undergone a £20 million re-development which has transformed it into a world-class resort, including a new four-star 80-bedroom hotel complex. The work also saw a major refurbishment of the existing clubhouse and improvements to its two 18-hole championship golf courses - The Nicklaus Signature Course, the first UK design by iconic golf superstar Jack Nicklaus, and The Kernow Course, which itself has previously hosted European Tour events.
St Mellion International Resort is part of the Crown Golf group, the UK's largest golf club owner/operator with 31 properties and over 50 golf courses in its portfolio. With pride in customer service and innovation, it aims to provide an outstanding golf experience for its members and visitors, tailor-made to suit the lifestyles and needs of a wide range of golfers.
