CENTURION, Gauteng (7 October 2011) – The inaugural Ernie Els South African Primary Schools Championship tees off at The Els Club Copperleaf this weekend, with 14 teams competing in this South African Golf Association event.
The championship has garnered immense interest throughout the country over the past few months of regional qualifying.
There were 14 regional qualifiers held by golf unions throughout South Africa, and the winning teams from those unions qualified for this Championship.
Such was the interest that the Aggenys Primary School team drove 650km to attend the Boland qualifying, while Krugerpark Primary School had two teams qualify for the Championship.
And this has validated the decision of the South African Golf Association (SAGA) to grow the game at primary school level.
“This Championship is designed not only to provide an opportunity for primary school kids to compete on a national level, but also to provide a structured channel to focus the good work of golf players, parents, teachers and coaches in this primary schools segment of the sport,” said Johan Scholtz, the coordinator of South African Junior Golf.
“Through an event such as this we are providing a competitive experience to so many more junior golfers on a national level.”
Each team consists of four players. The teams will compete over two rounds of 18 holes each, with the three best scores in every team to count.
The competing schools are: Anton van Wouw Primary School, St Stithians Primary School, Garsfontein Primary School, St Johns Primary School, Krugerpark Primary School 1, Kruinsig Primary School, Krugerpark Primary School 2, Bishops Prep School, Grey College Primary, Grey Primary (EP), Umhlanga Primary School, Bridgehouse Primary School, Richards Bay Primary School, Knysna Primary School.
